Well preserved and substantial castle ruins dominate the river Trent. The gatehouse and the south west tower date from 1130, built by Alexander 'The Magnificent', Bishop of Lincoln. The castle was continuously improved until the early 17thC. It was made untenable by use of explosives in 1647 after the Civil War by order of Parliament. The site is a public garden. Access to rooms in the towers, dungeons and tower lookout available by arrangement. Exhibitions of the castle's history of Newark are presented in the heritage centre on the castle grounds.
